With
the success of past Career Forum Days building interest, school districts are getting an
early start in scheduling professionals as speakers. (Last year the chapter provided
requested speakers for four school districts). If you are interested in spending a half
day speaking to 8 through 11 graders about being an architect, let the Chapter office
know. Programs start with the first period about 8:00 am with a continental breakfast
provided for the speakers.
There are two formats currently being used by school districts, in the first all the
speakers, usually in small career related groups, make short, realistic presentations on a
typical business day, education, licensing, etc. Illustrations, "show-and-tell,"
are encouraged but this is not a marketing opportunity. That is followed by fielding
ad-lib questions from the students related to being an architect. In the second, speakers
are given a table or a portion of a table to sit behind and/or use for display purposes.
Each period the students approach those career professionals they are interested in to
learn as much as they can about a typical work day, education and courses required, etc.
by asking random or predesigned questions. A basic script is available from the chapter
office if you need it.
Every attempt will be made to schedule you in your Alma Mater, or your neighborhood
school, if we get enough volunteers, but some travelling may be required. These career
days are becoming popular and some members have had to be turned away. If we have enough
members interested we can contact the school districts and offer the service. |
